Module 3.C – Paving Fabric Use Beneath Chip and Seal Surface Treatments (1.0 PDH Credit) by M. Marienfeld
Paving fabrics are commonly thought of as a waterproofing/stress absorption membrane interlayer, used between a distressed concrete or asphalt pavement and a new asphalt overlay (see module 3.A). In this training module, you will learn the features and benefits of an AASHTO M288 Paving Fabric (American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials) as part of a chip and seal overlay system. You will go through a step by step installation of a project in Texas as well as cost analysis for a project in California. This system will give the engineer another tool for optimizing pavement design, based on performance requirements and budget constraints of a project. The Texas installation referred to in this module looks at one technique of incorporating a paving fabric in a chip and seal installation. Be aware that some standard installations of a chip and seal surface treatment may involve variations such as stone type and size, as well as the use of an emulsion, but a Paving Fabric has been shown to enhance the performance of those systems as well.
